My 6 years old daughter was an NHS patient for years until now when I was told they are private practice and if I want her to continue using NHS service my husband or I should sign for monthly payment plan, otherwise she is no longer their patient

Another cancellation without being told. Richard cancelled 5pm day before and staff haven’t passed the message. Cheek to then put up stats about 40 missed appointments, wasting 10hrs and wanting to take private. 5th occurrence of a cancellation without being informed. Infuriating. How can you run a business like that?

Whole family has been removed by this practice as going private. Can deal with them removing me but think its poor of them to remove my 18 month old daughter and 74 year old mother from their practice though. Profit over people.

I’ve been using Verne Road Dental practice for years. And, I have ALWAYS arrived early for my appointment. However, on more than one occasion my Dentist - (Richard) arrived late, with his coat etc on, and tried to sneak in without being seen. Then approximately 7 minutes later, (after changing into his work uniform) he comes along the landing and into the surgery. Fast forward a few months, and, a week ago, I received a letter from Verne Road Dental Surgery saying that because of patients not turning up when scheduled, they want patients to become members, and the cost of becoming a member is…. over £200 a year. What an absolute disgrace.

Have gone private. No continuity.

They run a a clear two tier system. If you are a private paying customer you get to see a dentist- downstairs. As a formerly full paying patient I was embarrassed and felt humiliated when I was ushered out of the normal waiting room and sent upstairs to the nhs team after my circumstances changed. The service and treatment was also drastically different. If you are NHS and only pay part of your costs (or none) then you never see a dentist. As a formerly paying patient I was removed from the usual waiting room and herded to a different part of the building my first nhs appointment with them. You don’t see a dentist. You see a technician. Who is not qualified. There is no continuity of care and considering normally you go every six months- it was someone new everytime you go. You don’t get a dentist, you get a trainee technician. You even get sent to a separate waiting room from full paying patients. NHS patients are herded through the practise - in one door and back out and even after you have your initial appointment and feel confident the actual appointment when the work is done is a drastically different experience. The level of skill of person you see is not based on need or complication, it is seemingly based on whether you’re paying or insured or not. As a patient who used to pay it was a shock to the system to be subjected to the failings of an unqualified person. I endured 45 minutes of a technician drilling out a perfectly fine filling and completely ignore the opposite tooth that I had come in to have an old filling replaced in. She was simply awful. 40 years and I had never had a bad dentist experience before like this. She forgot to give me the glasses before flashing the light across my eyes. She repeatedly hesitated mid work and at one point even stopped to reconsider. Telling me repeatedly that it was ok to just swallow the gunk she was making in my mouth. 🤢 Isn’t that what the assistant and suction is for? I thought I was going to vomit. She lost control of her drill and bounced it 4 times across my mouth. Which was absolutely unreal to even comprehend how. I am absolutely certain I left the building in shock. She repeatedly hesitated and when she worked out her mistake she stopped mid work. After 45 minutes she finally said “well I think you’ll lose this tooth now” It was a truly awful experience. She never even sorted out the tooth we had agreed to do. I asked for a mirror to see what she had done and she was horrified and asked why I needed a mirror. Erm…because I have no idea what you just did to my face? As a formerly paying person I had asked about hygienist services and was told I didn’t need referring to a hygienist. Referring? Which is ludicrous, I asked if I could pay privately for a hygienist and was essentially fobbed off. Obviously their two tier systems are literally run as separate practises and there is no means of improving your treatment options or services if you use nhs at all. It has been over a year now and I have not been able to bring myself to find another nhs dentist yet as I simply couldn’t go through another 45 minutes of what amounted to nothing more than submitting myself to torture like that again The back filling that needed to be replaced has consistently deteriorated in this time and I’ve had numerous accesses. They are unaccountable as a practise and as can be seen from previous reviews will simply unassign patients - I would suspect the without cause cases to be where they are covering up mistakes. Having started years ago there as a private patient it is quite clear to see why and how the reviews are clearly split between 5 stars and only one. To be fair, their service was not like this years ago. Awful, felt violated and betrayed. Thank you Verne Road.

Update 24 Feb 2025; Just had a really good visit with hygienist Jo with nurse Libby. Fab clean and scale and advice on better cleaning plus little brushes to take away and get me started. They are so pleasant and friendly as all all the staff - Nathan, and the reception staff too. Love them. Update 6th Feb 2025; I’ve just had my 6 month appointment with Nathan and just really grateful I have this dentist. He updates me on what I need to do more work, and has booked me in with the dental hygienist for a 15 minute teeth cleaning masterclass which I’m pleased about as I’m 59 this year and probably stuck in a rut with how I use my toothbrush. The reception staff are lovely too 👍 Update 5th February 2024; Again, another great visit. I always see Nathan and he’s really engaging and pleasant. The work gets done and it feels professional and efficient as well as friendly. I’ve never had such a good experience with dentists as I have with this one, so I feel grateful to have them 👍 Update 10th March 2023; I’m still really happy at this dentists and it’s the best I’ve had. I’m a male aged 56 so not always looked after myself, but their positivity and encouragement makes me want to look after my teeth. I can’t say enough good things about them. I really like this dentist. I saw Nathan ( I think his name was) and both him and his dental nurse were great. They were friendly and put me at ease and even made me smile at one point. The reception staff are great too and signed me up no bother. At last I’ve got a dentist that I’m comfortable with!! I can’t recommend them highly enough. September 9th 2022; I’ve just been back for a check up with Nathan and then free de-scale by Olivia, and this is definitely the best dentist surgery I’ve ever had. It’s pleasant, friendly, affordable, and well run. I’m so pleased I’ve found them, and the support staff on reception and the dental technicians/assistants are lovely. Again, I can’t recommend them highly enough 😁
