I had an consultation on UR 4/14 tooth with Dr Raftery in 08/2021 in Winchester followed by a one visit root canal treatment in 06/2022 in Havant.
The full cost was £780.
I did CBCT scan in 07/2025, it is apparent that the tooth treated by Dr Raftery has lingering root canal problem despite his endo treatment in 2022.
I emailed HE in 08/2025 to arrange a follow-up to discuss and hoping to get help for this tooth infection. It was unequivocally communicated by Dr Raftery in 2023 during check-up visit that the treatment was “successful”, no further work needed. Dr Raftery highly praised his “victory”.
After email I sent to HE, I was booked in for follow up on 08/09/2025. Prior to the appointment, I received a phone call from the HE staff member suggesting "discounted treatment" options for the failed work before even being seen by Dr Raftery for any examination. During visit with Dr Raftery on 08/09/2025, I asked if I could voice record our consultation, consent given. I was showed some of my X-rays that displayed incorrect treatment dates on them. I believe that X-rays must always be correctly dated for the accuracy of record keeping. I was also shown other patients dental photos taken by Dr, which triggered GDPR concern whether his patients consented to sharing their photos. Dr Raftery after analysing my CBTC scan confirmed that there is a root canal problem with the tooth he worked on, he said it looked “fixable”. In his view, the root canal treatment didn’t “look bad” but sadly needed “more stuff doing to it”; Dr Raftery referred to my case as either a “bad luck” or a "re-boost population of bacteria that survived". Dr Raftery said that “in a way, the treatment was successful but in another way it wasn’t successful" because the endodontic infection is now in a different place in same tooth.
Dr Raftery apologised and was sorry there was a problem, but judging his own treatment it looked good to him and “in some ways he was successful in one visit” and because it “didn't look bad” he would not offer to remedy it free of charge. Dr Raftery asked me to pay £390 to have a go at fixing it. I made Dr Raftery aware that I suffered from severe neurological condition and that I barely earn any money. He made me to stand for over 30 minutes without offering me a chair, in agonising pain and spasms. Dr Raftery knew from my email to the practice that I refused to pay for any corrective work to fix his failed work. By not offering me free remedial work or full refund, HE is being in breach of private dentistry laws and regulations from bodies like GDC and the Dentistry Act 1984. My plea for a free remedial treatment was utterly disregarded. I will be writing a formal complaint to HE practice, raised within 12 months of discovery of the infection issue, end of July 2025. Dr Raftery displayed clear lack duty of care towards me and this infection in my tooth following his unsuccessful dental intervention in 2022 and his unreasonable money demand .Untreated toot inflection can result in serious, life-threatening conditions including death. I asked Dr Raftery TWICE, also ref. CBCT scan, if he was certain he reached the very tip/end of the root of the treated tooth. He first responded, "I thought it looked good, I think it looks decent", and when asked again, Dr said “good, within 2mm of the radiographic apex, a tip of the root”. I am aware that if the root canal filling is placed too far from the radiographic apex, it can lead to treatment failure. I was told that there was bony damage between my UR4/14 and UR5/15 in 2022. My 2025 CBCT scan shows periapical lesions in a new area- around the tip of the root. The failure of a dental professional to meet a reasonable standard of care, resulting in harm to a patient is a dental negligence if leading to financial loss or mental distress. I am a depression sufferer, my wellbeing is aggravated by HE. Asking me for more money to put things right and fix this unsuccessful / failed root canal endo work of 2022, that is simply disgraceful.
I will not hold back to take matters further.
