Update: The generic copy and pasted reply I have received from Perlau Gwyn is similar to what I have received since I began raising concerns in December 2024 - no accountability for the mistakes just a generic "we are sorry you feel this way". I feel that 6 months of attempting to resolve the issues - during which Perlau Gwyn often didn't even bother to reply to emails, voicemessages or text messages - was plenty of time, not to mention effort and patience. I was so concerned regarding Dr Mehdi's lack of accountability and failure to provide clinical input that I have refused further treatment from her and have raised my concerns with the GDC.
Original review:
I do not recommend Perlau Gywn Dental Care for aligner treatment.
I underwent clear aligner treatment with Dr. Iman Mehdi, in partnership with Smile White. My treatment was deemed "complex" by Smile White, and I paid the highest fee based on their promises of comprehensive bite correction and midline alignment. Unfortunately, my experience was not good.
After my first 30 sets of aligners, the outcomes promised by Smile White were not achieved. The refinement plan I was provided did not deal with these issues, leaving me with gaps between teeth, overjet, and an uncorrected midline, directly contradicting the initial treatment plan I was sold on. When I raised this with Dr Mehdi she gave contradictory information, including claiming Smile White aligners "only straighten the front teeth", directly conflicting with what the Smile White orthodontic team claimed.
Further to this, an independent orthodontist confirmed that the interproximal reduction (IPR) was done incorrectly (before my teeth were aligned), resulting in a new "v-shaped" gap caused by taking too much enamel and therefore causing permanent damage to my teeth. Dr Mehdi failed to apologise at any point for this error. Furthermore, refinement plans proposed IPR levels (up to 0.7mm) that exceeded recommended safe limits (0.5mm). When I raised these concerns, Dr. Mehdi's response was that she "follows the recommended IPR that is provided by the SmileWhite lab," effectively relinquishing her clinical responsibility to independently assess the safety and appropriateness of the proposed IPR for my specific case.
This demonstrates a profound lack of clinical judgment and accountability on Dr. Mehdi's part. As a GDC registered dentist, it was her duty to ensure the treatment plan, including IPR amounts, was clinically sound and safe for me. Instead, she delegated this critical assessment to an external lab.
Dr Mehdi's failure to actively provide clinical input meant I lost all trust that the treatment would proceed safely and provide me with the optimum outcome. Due to the unfulfilled treatment goals, concerns about unsafe IPR practices that she failed to properly evaluate, and a clear lack of professional accountability, I have since ceased my treatment with this provider. I strongly advise caution if considering clear aligner treatment here.
