2017: AVOID DR HENNIE VAN JAARSVELD AT ALL COSTS!
I was referred to Dr Hennie Van Jaarsveld by the practice's inhouse hygienist. I had a consultation with him on 28th January, and diagnosed periodentitis. He thought it would be certain that he would need to remove some of my worse affected teeth. At 43yrs old this came as an utter shock to me. He said he would write his assessment and treatment proposal up and send it to me in due course. He believed I would need surgery, it would take 4 hours and I would need complete sedation.
I returned home to Oxford in shock. I awaited his assessment results. I couldn't sleep, I suffered from panic attacks. I became hyper aware of my jaw, having been told that my bone had dissolved away and that the condition was extremely serious, and that it was only going to get worse. I found it hard to eat, I didn't want to chew anything too difficult incase my 'loose' teeth fell out. I was in a mess, breaking into tears almost every time I thought about it. I would lie in bed at night and any sensation in my teeth or jaw which were probably always present made me visualise my bone disintegrating, and I suffered from insomnia. I waited and waited for the treatment plan. It wasn't forthcming. After several calls to the practice, I finally received the email from the practice on the 11th March. I had had to wait for an agonising 7 weeks.
He proposed the following:
"Appointment 1:
Scale and polish with the hygienist to remove all tartar, plaque and stains within the week preceding the surgical appointment.
Appointment 2:
This appointment will be a surgical appointment and we propose periodontal surgery in the upper jaw’s posterior sextants (from your canine teeth backwards) as well as the lower jaw. We will also extract the following teeth: 26 and 27 (upper left first and second molar teeth), 16 (upper right first molar tooth) and 37 (lower left second molar). Post surgery we can discuss the different options in terms of tooth replacement.
We will require a 4 hour appointment and we propose to perform this with the benefit of intravenous sedation."
'Fees
Periodontal surgery £2400
Extraction of 4 molars £480
Intravenous sedation £250 (per hour) (x4h)
The above fees include the initial review appointment/s after surgery. There will be a charge for annual reviews.'
Single mum on a low income, I would need to take out a payment plan, or a loan to do this, which added further stress. My mother then recommended I get a second opinion. I asked for a copy of the xray, and sought 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinions to be absolutely sure. When I told these other specialists what Hennie had proposed, the first said he thought it was 'scandalous', the second said there was no way I should receive implants because I was a tooth grinder (Hennie had alluded to this being the course of action after all four teeth had been extracted), and the third and said he was 'embarrased for his profession' at the news of Hennie's treatment plan. All agreed there was no way I would need any of my teeth removed, they were healthy teeth, not causing me discomfort, and the disease could be managed and slowed using a different course of action.
In the end I had treatment to the tune of £595 with Omar Patel at Summertown Dental & Implants. Amazing man, wonderful service, really caring person who I saw last Monday, over a year and 8 months after the original treament plan proposed by Hennie. My gums are healthy again, my pockets are reduced from 8s to max 5, only two places where they are 5, otherwise the majority ar 3 and 2, even some 1s in there! I am so happy, I have a treatment plan that has saved my teeth, I have a hygiene programme which is working, and I am not in debt following a course of treatment which would just cause more problems in the future. I hope this review will enourage you to seek 2nd, 3rd and even 4th opinions if necessary before embarking on a PERILOUS, EXPENSIVE, UNNECCESARY COURSE OF TREATMENT with DR JAARSVELD.
Update: 7 years after leaving this review - Feb 2024 - I still have all my own teeth!!
