How I Overcame My Dental Anxiety
By Sarah M. | 18 November 2024
For years, the thought of visiting the dentist filled me with dread. I'd cancel appointments, make excuses, and avoid thinking about my teeth altogether. Here's how I finally overcame my dental anxiety.
My story
I hadn't been to the dentist in over seven years. The fear started after a painful childhood experience and grew worse with each passing year. I knew my teeth needed attention, but the anxiety was overwhelming.
Eventually, a persistent toothache forced me to act. I couldn't ignore it any longer.
Finding the right practice
The first step was finding a dentist who understood dental anxiety. I looked for:
- Practices that mentioned nervous patients on their website
- Reviews from other anxious patients
- Dentists who offered sedation options
- Practices willing to take things slowly
What helped me
Communication: My new dentist took time to explain everything before doing it. Knowing what to expect made a huge difference.
Control signals: We agreed on a hand signal I could use if I needed a break. Just knowing I had control helped me relax.
Distraction techniques: The practice offered headphones with music, which helped take my mind off the procedure.
Gradual exposure: We started with just a check-up, no treatment. Building positive experiences slowly reduced my fear.
Sedation: For my first treatment, I opted for conscious sedation. It helped me get through it, and subsequent visits became easier.
Advice for others
If you're struggling with dental anxiety:
- Don't be ashamed – it's incredibly common
- Tell the practice about your fears when booking
- Consider practices that specialise in anxious patients
- Take it one step at a time
- Celebrate small victories
Where I am now
Two years later, I actually look forward to my check-ups. My teeth are healthier than they've been in years, and the anxiety that once controlled me has faded.
If I can do it, so can you.
